How can computer-based documentation and other health IT tools facilitate communication between families and providers?
Health IT can help to facilitate communication
(PDF - 357 KB) between families and providers by allowing families to communicate directly with providers
via email, or view and update their medical records electronically. Studies
have shown that parents ask more open ended questions and conduct a more patient-centered communication when utilizing computer-based documentation, such as electronic medical records or patient portals. Some electronic medical records are designed to integrate with web-based messaging
, so that the patient's medical record is available to the physician during the online communication and messages are stored in the patients EMR.
