What is electronic prescribing?
Electronic prescribing, also called e-prescribing, is the computer-based electronic generation, transmission, and filling of a prescription that replaces paper and faxed prescriptions. E-prescribing allows the providers to electronically transmit a new prescription or renewal authorization to a community or mail-order pharmacy (Source: AHRQ 2008). E-prescribing delivers eligibility, formulary, and medication history data and provides additional clinical decision support.
