Which health centers are implementing PHRs?
There are a few PHR initiatives currently underway in the health center community. MiVIA, a PHR created for the migrant farm workers in Sonoma County California, the White River Rural Health Center patient portal and Whatcom County's Share Care Plan serve as illustrations of applications developed by health centers to serve the needs of a specific community.
Developed by a collaborative of several community-based organizations, MiVIA is a PHR created for migrant farm workers. In order to ensure that it would best meet the health information needs of its target population, the contribution of the community was sought during MiVIA's development. MiVIA serves as both a medical and oral health record and is designed to be easy to use and cost-effective. Once enrolled with MIVIA, members receive a username and password and can enter their health information online. They can then download this information from any location or make it available to their health care provider. Members also have the option of registering either as an individual or as a family. Family accounts allow individuals to enter the health information of up to 8 family members. Individuals participating in MiVIA are issued a photo ID that lists emergency contacts, medical conditions, medications and allergies.
