Privacy and Security

As more health care information becomes available in electronic format across health care organizations, the concerns about privacy and the ability to protect patient information on a need to know basis has become increasingly important. Thus, the following module is designed to equip your health care organization with the tools necessary to prevent against security risks and establish effective methods for maintaining the privacy and security of your EMR. Included is an explanation of risks you may encounter and how to mitigate these risks; how to assure the security of vendor- or ASP- sponsored EMRs; how to address patient and outside requests to view EMRs; how to secure wireless networks and prevent hacker attacks to the system; and how to manage EMRs effectively within your health network or RHIO.

Developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration as a resource for health centers and other safety net and ambulatory care providers who are seeking to implement health IT.
