Project Purpose: This project expands an existing Telehealth network in Virginia to increase access to specialty care and interactive health related distance learning to the citizens and healthcare professionals of six additional medically underserved counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The 9th
Congressional district is medically underserved by federal designation and has the highest rate of Medicare in the state.

Outcomes Expected: Outcomes: Increased utilization of specialty services; Increased referrals by regional providers; Decreased patient transfers out of primary medical community. Tools: Medical Center/Physician practice plan referring data (pre-post telemedicine in community; Patient satisfaction survey (per Health Evaluation Sciences); Provider satisfaction survey (per Health Evaluation Sciences).

Service Area: Six counties in SW Virginia (pop 118,000), Tazewell; Bland; Patrick; Scott; Alleghany and Carroll. All are MUAs and all but Alleghany and Tazewell are HPSAs.

Services Provided: Cardiology; Dermatology, Endocrinology; Ear/Nose/Throat; Emergency; Gastrointestinal; Geriatrics; OB/GYN; Hematology; Hepatology; Infectious Disease; Nephrology; Neurology;
Ophthalmology; Orthopedics; Pain Management; Pediatrics; Pediatric Cardiology, Psychiatry; Pulmonology; Plastic Surgery, Rheumatology; Surgery; Thoracic Cardiovascular; Transplant; Urology, Wound Care.

Equipment: Polycom Viewstations with the following peripherals: electronic stethoscope, patient hand held camera, document camera, computer and 27” monitor.

Transmission: Fractional T1 with access to full T1, ISDN, Internet and VTC Bridge.
