Letter to the Dallas Morning News

Have a heart; be an organ donor

The day of love is also a day to give. Feb. 14 is Valentine's Day, yet it holds another, lesser-known distinction. It is National Donor Day which raises awareness for organ, eye, marrow, platelet and blood donations. On a day set aside to express love for another person, National Donor Day can make a life-saving difference.

There are approximately 116,000 men, women and children on the organ transplant waiting list. I encourage everyone to consider registering as an organ donor so one day you can give the gift of life for one or many of these individuals.

The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration supports National Donor Day. If you want to learn more about organ donation, visit organdonor.gov or the Spanish-language site at donaciondeorganos.gov.

These sites offer information on how to start the organ donation conversation and register as a donor in Texas or in your home state. "Be an organ donor, all it costs is a little love."
