August 2-3, 2011

New committee members were sworn in and welcomed.

The committee reviewed recommendations from the three previous SACIM reports: Opportunities in Clinical Public Health Practice to Improve Birth Outcomes, Effects of the Deficit Reduction Act on Maternal and Child Health Services, and Eliminating Health Disparities in Infant Mortality.

There was discussion about health reform opportunities to reduce infant mortality; specifically through new program investments in home visiting, pregnant teens, personal responsibility, school-based health clinics, community health centers, breastfeeding, and nursing training.

There was a presentation on the Affordable Care Act and the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program which covered legislative authority, program goals and priorities, evidence-based home visiting models, and the status of program implementation.

Committee business objectives were: to review the SACIM charge, to meet with the Secretary and discuss SACIM priorities, to propose a framework for organizing SACIM’s subcommittees, and to discuss next steps.

There were no public comments.
