In a country with the highest maternal mortality rate in the world, nurses were in short supply when the government reached out to U.S. officials with the ambitious goal of increasing its nursing workforce from 300 to more than 1,100 by 2020.

HRSA answered the call.

The Resilient and Responsive Health Systems Initiative is a 5-year, $9.5 million, multi-country plan to improve maternal health training and strengthen the detection of infectious diseases like HIV.  In partnership with the ICAP program at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, the agency's HIV/AIDS Bureau oversaw the rebuilding of the National School of Midwifery as a Center of Excellence in the region, complete with simulation-based training equipment and web-based continuing education.

HRSA's George Tidwell, now stationed in Africa, and Dr. Myatt Htoo Razak, Director of the Division of Global HIV/AIDS Programs, toured the new facility on May 16 to see HRSA's dollars at work.

The new lab and learning center, Ambassador Brewer said, represents "a milestone in the maternal health sector, especially in this era of post-Ebola recovery."

"I am proud to have HRSA on our team."
