Dr. Sigounas outlined multiple initiatives underway at HRSA: Lowering prescription drug prices and delivering value-based care; expanding substance abuse and behavioral health services to address the opioid epidemic; effectively ending the HIV epidemic by 2030; reducing maternal mortality; increasing children's oral health care and lowering rates of childhood obesity -- which, he noted, is a leading risk factor for Type-II diabetes.

Two-thirds of the cost for diabetes-care in the U.S. is borne by the government, and the ripple effects in increased absenteeism, reduced productivity and lost workforce capacity due to mortality is well over $50 billion per year, according to American Diabetes Association.
