How are volunteers appointed?
As described below, the application process takes into consideration staffing needs, experience in the procurement and transplant field, and if the nominee's background addresses a particular area of expertise.
For Committee positions, the application review process takes into consideration the OPTN Final Rule requirements, the needs of the particular committee, and whether the nominee's background addresses particular areas of expertise as indicated in the call for nominations. Regional Councillors review applications and provide recommendations to the Vice President, who makes final appointments. All applicants will receive notification regarding the outcome of the selection process.
Step 1: Conduct Needs Assessment
- Committee leadership provides an assessment of needs for upcoming vacancies for the Board Vice President to review and approve
- The Vice President reviews upcoming vacancies in conjunction with requirements of the OPTN Final Rule
- The Vice President approves the annual Call for Nominations
Step 2: Call for Nominations
- The Call for Nominations is released to the public in February; it details each committee vacancy
- The application period is open for one month. All applicants must submit a Volunteer Interest Form by the announced date
Step 3: Review and Recommendation
- Regional Councillors, with assistance from Committee leadership and the Associate Regional Councillors as needed, review committee applicants based on the assessment of committee needs and the OPTN Final Rule requirements
- Regional Councillors make recommendations to the Vice President in early May
Step 4: Appointment
- The Vice President considers recommendations and makes Committee appointments in June
Individuals will be notified of the results in June; committee terms will begin on July 1.
- The Nominating Committee reviews upcoming vacancies in conjunction with requirements of the OPTN Final Rule and develops recruitment recommendations
- The Nominating Committee develops and releases the annual Call for Nominations in November and collects applications through January
- The Nominating Committee reviews applications for each Board position from December to February
- The Nominating Committee presents a proposed slate of Board of Directors nominees and Associate Regional Councillor nominees for Board approval at the March Board meeting; current Associate Regional Councillors move up to become nominees for Regional Councillors on the Board slate
- The national election for the Board is conducted in May; all eligible OPTN members may vote
Regional Councillor and Associate Regional Councillor recommendations are based on the following criteria:
- Professional experience and expertise
- A range of professions and experience
- Past history of the candidate’s ability to represent both regional and national perspectives
Current Associate Regional Councillors become Regional Councillors after they serve their two-year term. Associate Regional Councillors are elected through a regional election; all eligible OPTN members in a region may vote.
