Today the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) released new data, marking a record-breaking 91.4% of patients receiving HIV medical care through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program were virally suppressed, significantly exceeding the national viral suppression rate. This means people with HIV taking their medication can live longer, healthier lives and cannot sexually transmit HIV.
New data also show nearly 602,000 clients were served in 2024 - the most clients ever served in the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program’s 35-year history. This milestone highlights the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program’s vital role in expanding access to care for people with HIV and contributing to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States.
“For 35 years, HRSA’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program has transformed HIV from a death sentence into a manageable chronic condition by ensuring access to comprehensive care, medications, and essential support services nationwide,” said HRSA Administrator Thomas Engels. “Today’s data underscore the critical role of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program in improving health outcomes in communities across the country.”
For nearly four decades, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program has funded and coordinated with cities, counties, states, and local community-based organizations to support direct health care and support services for people with HIV with lower incomes. The program tailors its approaches to meet the needs of people with HIV and their communities, addressing a range of health-related needs such as mental and behavioral health care, transportation, housing, medical case management, and nutrition. These services help clients enter and stay in care, access medications, and remain virally suppressed, which prevents forward HIV transmission and reduces health care costs.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program is at the forefront of efforts to Make America Healthy Again and the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. (EHE) initiative. New data highlight key milestones, including:
- Nearly 602,000 people with HIV in the U.S. received life-saving care, medication, and essential support services through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, representing over 50% of those with diagnosed HIV in the U.S. This is an increase of nearly 26,000 clients.
- More than 91% of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program patients receiving HIV medical care were virally suppressed in 2024. This is up from 69.5% of patients virally suppressed in 2010 and significantly higher than the 67.2% virally suppressed nationally among all people with diagnosed HIV.
- More than 47% of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients are aged 50 years and older, demonstrating the program’s success in supporting older clients and its commitment to addressing the unique needs of people aging with HIV.
Despite these unsurpassed gains in viral suppression among Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program patients, new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that about 87% of new HIV transmissions result from people who are either undiagnosed or not engaged in care. In 2024, HRSA launched the Ryan White Program 2030, which focuses on sustaining high-quality care and treatment for people currently receiving Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program services, while expanding efforts to identify and engage individuals with HIV who are undiagnosed or out-of-care.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program supports recipients that address the epidemic in communities most severely affected by HIV, including cities and counties (Part A); states and territories (Part B); local community-based groups that provide ambulatory health services for people with HIV (Part C); local community-based groups that provide medical care for low-income women, infants, children and youth with HIV (Part D); and for HIV workforce education and training, oral health care, and other innovative models of HIV care and treatment (Part F).
