New strategy outlines steps to grow, strengthen, and sustain the home visiting workforce

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recognizes National Home Visiting Week, April 20–24, 2026, a nationwide observance celebrating the critical role home visitors play in improving maternal and child health, strengthening families, and supporting communities.

As part of this year’s observance, HRSA is releasing the National Strategy for the Home Visiting Workforce, a comprehensive effort to strengthen and grow the home visiting workforce. The strategy focuses on building clear career pathways, investing in professional development opportunities, and supporting workforce well-being—key components of advancing maternal and child health.

Home visiting connects families with trusted professionals who provide vital support during pregnancy and early childhood. HRSA’s Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program improves maternal and child health outcomes by helping children get the best possible start, addressing potential health issues early, and promoting school readiness. Through home visiting, MIECHV helps families navigate systems and access affordable health care, early childhood services, and other essential supports. In Fiscal Year 2025, the MIECHV Program provided over one million visits to more than 150,000 parents and children.

“Home visitors are the backbone of early support for families across America,” said HRSA Administrator Tom Engels. “Their work improves health outcomes, strengthens families and communities, and ensures that parents have the resources they need to raise healthy children. During National Home Visiting Week, we recognize their contributions and dedication to build healthier futures for American families.”

National Home Visiting Week also provides an opportunity to celebrate excellence in the field. HRSA congratulates the outstanding National Home Visitors of the Year. These individuals demonstrate the exceptional compassion, skill, and dedication in serving the unique needs of families and communities. As part of the week’s events, Administrator Engels visited MIECHV-funded programs in Madison, Wisconsin to highlight the impact of this program and honor a National Home Visitor of the Year awardee.

“Across the country, home visitors are trusted partners for families, delivering evidence-based services that make a lasting difference,” Administrator Engels added. “The National Home Visitors of the Year exemplify the impact and importance of this workforce, and we are honored to celebrate their achievements.”

Home visiting is an evidence-based approach that supports maternal and child health, strengthens family stability, and improves long-term outcomes for children and families. Through partnerships with states, jurisdictions, and tribes, HRSA continues to expand the reach and quality of these services nationwide.
