Federal advisory committee will provide recommendations to strengthen rural health and human services across America

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), today announced the re-establishment of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services (NACRHHS). Under the leadership of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and HRSA Administrator Tom Engels, this federal advisory committee will provide recommendations to the Secretary on improving health care and human services in rural communities across the nation.

The committee will advise the Secretary on issues affecting the delivery and financing of healthcare and human services in rural communities, with a continued focus on improving access to primary care, strengthening local health systems, and support efforts to prevent chronic disease, and advancing better health outcomes for rural Americans.

“Strong rural communities depend on strong local health systems,” said HRSA Administrator Tom Engels. “This committee will bring together experienced leaders from across rural America to provide practical recommendations that help improve access to quality care and strengthen the health and well-being of rural families.”

First established in 1987, NACRHHS has provided nearly 630 recommendations to HHS on improving rural health and human services. Its work has informed federal efforts addressing maternal health, behavioral health, emergency medical services, rural hospital sustainability, workforce development, and other unique priorities affecting rural communities.

The committee will consist of up to 15 members appointed by Secretary Kennedy. Members will represent expertise across rural healthcare delivery, financing, research, public health, aging services, behavioral health, tribal health, transportation, economic development, and other fields important to rural communities. HRSA’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy provides management and operational support for the committee.

The committee is authorized under Section 222 of the Public Health Service Act and operates in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Learn more about NACRHHS, including future meetings and membership.
